Middle of January Already

I can't believe it's the 14th of January already. Where has this month gone?? I have been busy sewing and crocheting since Christmas. I have 4 more quilt blocks to sew together for a king-size quilt I am making. It is done in a 9-patch block pattern. This was a pattern that my Grandma Shaw loved to use when she made quilts. It contains 72 12-inch blocks. I have hand-sewn all the blocks. When I get the other 4 done I will then lay them out on the floor to make sure I don't get 2 similar blocks next to each other. That should be lots of fun with Misty helping me arrange the blocks. I will post photos of this stage of my quilt. After I get the rows laid out I will stitch them together to complete the quilt top. Then I will have to get the quilt frame that was my Grandmas. I have it stored in Bobbie's attic. I decided to store it there so Bobbie could use it also.
I have been crocheting a lot too since Christmas. I joined snowflakes88, a Yahoo Group. This year each month we get 8 patterns to crochet Snowflakes. So, I've been making snowflakes in between quilting. I also have been doing a CAL (crochet along) project with the group. It was a mystery until the 3rd set of directions. We are making a hat and scarf set. Mine is Fire Engine Red. I'm almost finished with the hat and then need to crochet the scarf.
If that isn't enough crochet projects I started a Lone Wolf filet crochet wallhanging. It's going to take a while to finish it. I can't wait. I want to mount it on black or midnight blue velvet when it is finished. It will go nice in my livingroom that is done in Native American and Wildlife.
Hope that everybody had a wonderful holiday. I know Rich and I had a wonderful holiday.

Prescription Prices
To me, this is unexcusable. No wonder our insurance premiums are so expensive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How are people who have no insurance to cover prescription drugs affording them? It's just not right and something needs to be done about it.
I better get off this bandwagon before I need another prescription to calm me down.

Soft Rolled Sugar Cookies
Last night I started making my Christmas Cookies. In past years I have baked approximately 100 dozen cookies. This year I won't be baking as many. I love this recipe for Soft Rolled Sugar Cookies. The cookies are soft instead of crunchy. In fact, I think Rich ate about a dozen of them last night. I just can't seem to keep him out of the cookies...he loves them fresh from the oven. I'd love to share my recipe with you.SOFT ROLLED SUGAR COOKIES
1 cup soft margarine
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1/2 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
4 1/2 cups flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, milk and vanilla; beat well. Stir flour with baking powder and salt; blend into creamed mixture. Divide in half. Cover; chill 1 hour. On lightly floured surface roll each half to 1/8th-inch. Cut into desired shapes with cookie cutters. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 6 to 8 minutes. DO NOT OVER BAKE!! Makes 13 dozen cookies.
Instead of cutting out cookies I roll into 1 1/2-inch balls and place on ungreased cookie sheets. I take a glass and dip into sugar and press the cookies into rounds. I then sprinkle on colored sugar and bake as directed. Makes about 5 - 5 1/2 dozen cookies.
I hope that you will try my sugar cookie recipe and enjoy them. I will be sharing more recipes during the month.
Happy Baking, Shirley

Time for Chirstmas Movies and Television Specials
It's the time of the year for all the Christmas movies and Television Specials. I love this time of year. Some of my favorite movies are Miracle on 34th Street, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, Chevy Chase's Christmas Vacation, Bill Murry's Scrooged, and A Christmas Carol. I love the television specials of Christmas music. Some of my favorite Christmas programs on TV are Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, Santa Claus is Coming to Town and my all time favorite...............The Little Drummer Boy. Call me old-fashioned I don't care. I don't want to see Christmas movies or programs that are "blood and guts". I want the cute ones that have meaning behind them.

Peace Wreath - Anti-war or Satan???

WOMAN FACES FINES FOR WREATH PEACE SIGN
By Robert Weller, Associated Press Writer
Sunday Novermber 26, 2006
DENVER - A homeowners association in southwestern Colorado has threatened to fine a resident $25 a day until she removes a Christmas wreath with a peace sign that some say is an anti-Iraq war protest or a symbol of Satan.
Some residents who have complained have children serving in Iraq, said Bob Kearns, president of the Loma Linda Homeowners Association in Pagosa Springs. He said some residents have also believed it was a symbol of Satan.
Three or four residents complained, he said.
"Somebody could put up signs that say drop bombs on Iraq. If you let one go up you have to let them all go up," he said in a telephone interview Sunday.
Lisa Jensen said she wasn't thing of the war when she hung the wreath. She said, "Peace is way bigger than not being at war. This is a spiritual thing."
Jensen, a past association president, calculates the fines will cost her about $1000, and doubts they will be able to make her pay. But she said she's not going to take it down until after Christmas.
"Now that it has come to this I feel I can't get bullied," she said. "What if they don't like my Santa Claus?"
The association in this 200-home subdivision 270 miles southwest of Denver has sent a letter to her saying that residents were offended by the sign and board "will not allow signs, flags, etc. that can be considered divisive." The subdivision's rules say no signs, billboards or advertising are permitted without the consent of the architectural control committee.
Kearns ordered the committee to require Jensen to remove the wreath, but members refused after concluding that it was merely a seasonal symbol that didn't say anything. Kearns fired all five committee members.
Yes, I'm a baby boomer!!!!!!!! I always thought that this was a universal symbol for PEACE. Have I misunderstood the meaning for all these years???????????
Why is it that it just takes a few people to upset the whole applecart???????? I agree with the lady in the article..........what's next.........Santa and his reindeer, Frosty the Snowman..............maybe the Grinch??????????
It's too bad that some people have nothing better to do than mind somebody else's business and not their own!!!!!!!!
SNOW!!!

Imagine my surprise when I looked out the kitchen window and it was snowing around 8am this morning.. The snowflakes were huge. The middle photo is looking out my kitchen window. By 10am it had all melted. BooHoo!! I love the snow. That is one thing I miss about living in South Lake Tahoe, CA..............the snow.
Thanksgiving

Hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Our's was quiet. Dad and Mae came over for dinner and spent the afternoon. Rich's sister Barb and her husband were unable to make it down to visit.
This year I roasted turkey. The first one I have done in over 6 years. We had a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Roast turkey, cornbread dressing, gravy, mashed potatoes, candied yams, green beans, corn, dinner rolls. For dessert we had pumpkin, coconut cream and pecan pie.

Every year at Scrap101 we set a goal for how many layouts we would like to finish. This is the 2nd year that I have participated. The first year I set my goals for 100 layouts and I met that goal by June. So this year I decided to up my goal to 365 layouts.
I met my goal on Saturday. As of today I have 373 layouts done this year.
I think I will set my goal for 500 layouts next year.
I would love to thank my wonderful husband, Rich for being so understanding with me and my scrapbooking.
"Sweetheart,
Thank you for being so understanding with me and my scrapbooking. You are always so excited when I show you my layouts. I also love your suggestions when I ask for help with a layout. I owe you for all the times you have patiently waited for me to shop at Michaels, Rubberstamping and Scrapbooking Too!, ect. I don't know how you put up with me always wanting to take photos no matter where we go. Remember when we went to Virginia City, NV last year and I took over 700 photos..............and we were only gone 5 days.
Love, Shirley"

Thanks to all Veterans

FREEDOM ISN'T FREE
I watched the flag pass by one day.
It fluttered in the breeze
A young soldier saluted it,
and then he stood at ease.
I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud
With hair cut square and eyes alert
He'd stand out in any crowd.
I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil?
How many mothers' tears?
How many pilots' planes shot down?
How many foxholes, soldiers' graves?
And remembered then,
No freedom isn't free
I heard the sound of taps one night,
When everything was still.
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That taps had meant "Amen".
When a flag had draped a coffin
Of a brother, sister, friend.
I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.
I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington........
No-----------------freedom isn't free.

Progress on my weekly goal

I've been making progress on my weekly goal of reorganizing my kitchen. I've had to be real creative in storage of items I don't use everyday..........extra bread machine, crockpot, canner, donut maker, ChipShot, cake decorating supplies, etc. The kitchen is looking better.........but far from finished.
I know that I will never have a kitchen that will make the pages of Home Beautiful. I just want my kitchen to be warm and cozy and be a reflection of me.
I want to showcase some of my collections.........watermelons, baskets, tins, etc. in the kitchen and dining area.
Off to work on my goal.

Weekly Goal

At Scrap 101 we are doing a weekly goal list. My weekly goal this week is to declutter kitchen and rearrange cupboards.
As you can see in the photos I have a fairly compact kitchen. It has been hard for me to arrange the cupboards so they feel comfortable when I'm cooking. The way some kitchens are designed I wonder if the designers even know how to cook. I love to bake so I'm trying to get all my baking supplies in one area.
I think the problem is that I have way too many items I want in my baking area. I have my bread machine, hand-cranked flour mill, numerous baking pans, numerous mixing bowls............see what I mean. I'm going to have to go through and decide exactly how important each item is and where it needs to be.
The photos were taken the day we bought our mobile.
